The Queen’s Medical Center is the first and only breast program in Hawaii to receive accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). “The Queen’s Breast Center received a superior score,” said Diane Thompson, MD, Medical Director of the Queen’s Women’s Health Center. “This accreditation means we have met 27 highly explicit standards.” Currently, only 51 of over 5,700 registered hospitals in the U.S. have met the required standards, though over 900 institutions have applied.

The NAPBC is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to the improvement in the quality of care and monitoring of patients with breast disease. “The key to the Queen’s Breast Center is the interdisciplinary clinical management, availability of a patient navigator, research and comprehensive, seamless service,” said Nona Irvine, RN, Director of the Women’s Health Center. “Women don’t need to face uncertainty for days, waiting for tests to be scheduled.”

The team of physicians includes the primary care physician and the disciplines of oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, pain and palliative care, plastic surgery, radiology, psychiatry and OB/GYN. Other members of the team include staff in nursing, genetics, data registry, research, physical therapy, mammography, sonography and social work, along with dietitians and a patient navigator.

The Queen’s Breast Center offers patients the most current forms of evaluation, treatment and follow-up care, and collaborates closely with the Queen’s Cancer Center. Strong community ties with the American Cancer Society, Hawaii Affiliate Susan G. Komen for the Cure and Imi Hale, a Native Hawaiian cancer network, have been developed. “This accreditation demonstrates our firm commitment to offering our patients every significant advantage in their battle against breast disease,” said Kathleen Mah, MD, Chief of General Surgery and Chair of the Breast Program Leadership.
