Canadian Breast Cancer Research Alliance
A UNIQUE ALLIANCE DEDICATED TO A COMMON VISION:
Through research we will find ways to prevent breast cancer, improve survival and enhance the quality of life for those living with this disease.
As Canada's primary granting agency for breast cancer research, CBCRA plays a national leadership role in setting priorities and directions for breast cancer research.
CBCRA does not raise funds for breast cancer research directly. The members and friends of CBCRA have pooled their resources to stimulate and support high quality Canadian breast cancer research across the full spectrum.
About CBCRA
Who we are & What we do
The Canadian Breast Cancer Research Alliance, originally known as the Canadian Breast Cancer Research Initiative, represents a unique forging of ties among the Avon Flame Foundation, Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Canadian Breast Cancer Network, Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Health Canada, Public Health Agency of Canada and the National Cancer Institute of Canada. With major financial commitments from these members, CBCRA is the primary granting agency for breast cancer research in Canada.
The Alliance was created as a result of a groundswell of support from Canadian women, activists, survivors, and women in Parliament who came together to focus attention on ways to prevent and ultimately cure breast cancer. They also wished to help women living with the disease. Since the beginning, breast cancer survivors have been an integral part of the Alliance, helping to set research priorities alongside researchers and clinicians.
Since 1993, CBCRA has allocated more than $178 million to 530 different breast cancer research projects across the entire spectrum of breast cancer research, including prevention, early detection, treatment, fundamental laboratory investigations, quality of life and health services.
Phase I - 1993 to 1998
When the Alliance was formed in 1993, the four founding partners contributed funding to be directed towards a coordinated program of breast cancer research. The federal government, through the Medical Research Council of Canada (now the Canadian Institutes of Health Research) and Health Canada (through the National Health Research and Development Program) committed $20 million over five years to the CBCRA. The National Cancer Institute of Canada committed $10 million with funds raised by the Canadian Cancer Society.
Phase II - 1998 to 2003
At the outset of CBCRA's second five-year term, the federal government pledged another $15 million in addition to the $10 million pledged by the Medical Research Council of Canada (now the Canadian Institutes of Health Research). The National Cancer Institute of Canada also pledged another $10 million with funds raised by Canadian Cancer Society volunteers. Two new funding partners joined, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and the Avon Flame Foundation, each contributing $5 million over five years. The Canadian Breast Cancer Network, a national organization of breast cancer survivors, also came on board to effectively represent the survivor community in all aspects of CBCRA work.
Phase III - 2003 - 2008
In March 2003, the Alliance members renewed their commitment for another five years, pledging a total of $60.5 million to be spent on the highest quality Canadian breast cancer research. This collective will continue to coordinate breast cancer research efforts in Canada to maximize synergies and reduce potential duplication.
