Anatomy
The female breast is made up of a glands and ducts designed to produce and deliver nutrition to an infant.

What Causes Breast Cancer?
Doctors don't know what causes breast cancer. But by studying large populations of women, they have identified certain risk factors that make it somewhat more likely that a woman will develop the disease.

Detection & Diagnosis
Breast cancer is detected using imaging techniques and diagnosed after a biopsy.

Characterizing the Tumor
If breast cancer is found, several other tests may be performed to fully characterize its stage and type. This information is vital for choosing the best treatment plan for each individual patient.

Surgery
Surgery (lumpectomy or mastectomy) is usually the first choice of treatment for breast cancer. Reconstruction of the breast is an option for most women who have had a mastectomy.

Systemic Therapy
The goal of systemic treatment is to rid the body of any cancer cells that may have spread outside of the breast and to prevent future metastases.

Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapy is targeted at the breast and sometimes the surrounding lymph nodes to destroy any stray cells that may have been left behind.
