Liga Portuguesa Contra o Cancro é uma Associação Cultural e de Serviço Social, privada, declarada de utilidade pública, que promove a prevenção primária e secundária do cancro, o apoio social e a humanização da assistência ao doente oncológico e a formação e investigação em oncologia.

Tem como finalidades:

Divulgar informação sobre o Cancro e promover a Educação para a Saúde, nomeadamente quanto à sua prevenção;

Contribuir para resolver a situação dos doentes oncológicos em todas as fases da história natural da doença;

Cooperar com as Instituições envolvidas na área da oncologia, nomeadamente com os Centros do Instituto Português de Oncologia de Francisco Gentil;

Estimular e apoiar a formação e a investigação em oncologia;

Estabelecer e manter relações com Instituições congéneres, nacionais e estrangeiras;

Contribuir para o apoio social e a humanização da assistência ao doente oncológico;

Desenvolver, isoladamente ou em colaboração com outras entidades, estruturas para a prevenção primária, diagnóstico, tratamento e reabilitação em Cancro.

The Portuguese Cancer League (Liga Portuguesa Contra o Cancro) is a private non-profit organisation, declared by law of public utility, founded in April 1941.

The League activities are developed by 5 branches with head offices in Coimbra (central branch), Lisbon (south branch), Oporto (north branch), Angra do Heroísmo (Azores island branch) and Funchal (Madeira island branch). The Branches are responsible for the development of the League activities in their regions.

One of the core activities is the fundraising for cancer awareness and education, essential to develop campaigns like the European week against cancer and the National Breast Cancer Screening Programme.

We rely on hundreds of dedicated volunteers from all over the country to help with our fundraising activities and support to the patients.

The League major fields of activity are:

Health education and cancer prevention campaigns, especially among the younger generations, in the tobacco field and “alerts for cancer signs”.

The National Breast Cancer Screening Programme;

Fundraising for cancer awareness and education;

Promotion of the “Movimento Vencer e Viver”, the League’s Reach to Recover Support Group, namely by creating new support groups in smaller towns;

Financial support and participation in scientific research projects, equipments and health professional education and information;

Assistance and support to patients and their families and relatives;

Palliative Care programs and units;

Organization of the national “European Week Against Cancer” with the support of the Portuguese Education Ministry and the ECL – European Cancer Leagues;

To collaborate and develop projects at international level namely with the UICC - International Union Against Cancer, the ECL - European Cancer Leagues and the ALICC – Associação das Ligas Ibero-Americanas Contra o Cancro;
