The aim of the Breast Care & Treatment Center is to heal and restore patients - physically, psychologically, and spiritually. In 1977 Elissa J. Santoro, M.D., a surgical oncologist, started the first Breast Center dedicated to this goal. Sarah S. Schaefer, M.D., a breast surgeon who was director of the Surgical Breast Service at Bellevue Hospital in New York University, joined the Center in 1995.

The two breast surgeons work together in a healing environment, where their focus is on the whole patient, not just the treatment of the disease. Now available is the latest, and only, Philips MRI for the breast where high-risk patients can have biopsies, by means of needle localization, and early-detection diagnoses.

The Breast Care & Treatment Center is a warm, comforting, and feminine environment. The doctors and nurses actively provide education and support to patients about early detection and treatment of breast cancer. Dr. Santoro's and Dr. Schaefer's philosophy of considering their patient's total needs is the very essence of this facility. They know that to treat the whole person is critical to a patient's physical recovery and well-being. Therefore, the support staff has been selected both for there skill and for their nurturing approach to patients.

Because of the Breast Care & Treatment Center's location at the Saint Barnabas Ambulatory Care Center, patients have the advantage of the state-of-the-art mammography, ultrasound, core biopsy, and MRI services as well as Complimentary Medicine services.
