Fibrocystic changes can occur during the menstrual cycle. Women who have this condition will notice lumps in both breasts that increase in size and tenderness just before their period begins. Much of this is due to hormone fluctuations during the menstrual cycle. They may be considered non-cancerous but all breast lumps should be examined by a doctor. A mammogram, ultrasound, or needle biopsy may be necessary to confirm that the breast lumps are benign. Only a doctor can make the diagnosis of breast cancer.
