A biopsy is usually performed after confirmation of a breast lump or enlarged lymph node is made. If screening methods such as a mammogram, ultrasound, cat scan or MRI determine a lump is present, then a radiologist or other specialist will do a biopsy to remove breast tissue cells to be observed under a microscope. The type of cells present will help determine if a breast lump or enlarged lymph node is actually cancerous.
